Buckley Wildlife Walk

A self-guided nature trail around Buckley, a celebration of wildlife on our doorstep, from Councillor Dan Roseb.

πŸ“ About the Walk

πŸ—ΊοΈ
Wildlife Walk The route covers just a small portion of Buckley's green corridors, taking in woodland, hedgerows, wildflower verges, brooks, and open grassland β€” all within walking distance of the town centre.
🌳
Trees Walk β€” dedicated to some of our main tree species A focused experience visiting the area's accessible trees, all on public land and next to pavements/footpaths. Ideal if you want to explore Buckley's oldest living residents in more depth. This includes some non-native planted trees, so look out for how much more additional wildlife you see around our native trees.

πŸ“± How to Use This App

1
Tap Begin Walk on the start screen. The app will ask for location permission β€” needed to detect when you're near a stop.
2
Walk towards any marker on the map. When you're within 20 metres, your phone vibrates and an information card appears automatically.
3
Read the card, look around for what's described, then tap Mark as Visited. Your progress saves automatically.
4
You can also tap any marker at any time to read about that stop β€” you don't need to be nearby.
5
Switch to the Trees tab for a separate walk tracking just the woodland stops, with its own independent progress and completion badge.
6
Install this app via "Add to Home Screen" in your browser menu. It then works offline, useful when signal is poor.

πŸ” Tips for Wildlife Watching

🀫
Move slowly and quietlyMost insects, birds and mammals will move away before you see them if you walk at a normal pace. Pause often and scan the area around you.
πŸ‘€
Look at different layersThe canopy, the mid-storey shrubs, the ground, and the soil surface are all different habitats. Try spending a minute on each. Use ID tools like Butterfly Conservation Identify a Butterfly website. Take lots of pictures so you can ID when you get home. Follow well known specilalists online, sometimes they have helpful ID videos like this one from Leif Bersweden, we have all those grasses on our common.
🎧
Listen as much as you lookOn a calm day you will often hear wildlife before you see it. The Merlin bird ID app can identify birdsong in real time.
πŸ“…
Visit in different seasonsSpring offers birdsong and blossom; summer has insects and wildflowers; autumn brings berries and fungi; winter is best for lichen and visiting birds.
🚨
Protect our wildlifeDon't pick or damage flowers or land, if you don't know what it is. We have lots of important species and protected landscapes which could carry legal ramifications if damaged.
